contractions with a

a (to) always combines (contracts) with certain words that follow it.

With o and a: (the)

a + o = ao > Nós vamos ao cinema. (We’re going to the movies.)
a + a = à > Vamos à praia. (Let’s go to the beach.)

With aquele, aquela and aquilo: (that)

a + aquele = àquele > Não falo mais àquele homem (I don’t speak to that man any more.)
a + aquela = àquela > Entregue àquela moça. (Deliver this card to that girl.)
a + aquilo = àquilo > Foi referência àquilo. (It was a reference to that.)
