I got really curious about the use of por in Portuguese. Google Translates por as a long list of words: by, for, per, in, of, to, with, via, out of, for the sake of ETC.
Confusing to say the very least.
While true that por can translate as all of the above, I've found that you can use this word correctly 90% OF THE TIME by just knowing TWO of these meanings:
por = by
por aqui = around here (literally, by here)
por perto = close by (literally, by close)
por acaso = by chance
por = for
por volta de = about, around (literally, for return of)
por motivo de = for reason of (literally, for motive of)
por causa de = because of (literally, for cause of)
por enquanto = for a while (literally, for while)
