Em always combines (contracts) with these words. It’s actually rare to see em alone in a sentence.
With o and a: (the)
em + o = no >

With ele and ela: (he/she)
em + ele = nele >
Joguei a bala nele.
(I threw him the ball.)
em + ela = nela >
Estou pensando nela.
(I’m thinking about her.)
With um and uma: (a)
em + um = num >
Eu trabalho num escriótrio.
(I work in a office.)
em + uma = numa >
Encontramos numa festa.
(We met at a party.)
With esse, essa and isso: (this)
em + esse = nesse >
Nesse momento estou ocupado.
(I’m busy right now.)
em + essa = nessa >
Eu moro nessa casa.
(I live in this house.)
em + isso = nisso >
Eu não acredito nisso.
(I don’t believe in this.)
With este, esta and isto: (this – more formal)
