And so here it is, naked for all to see: the verb Pôr *note the hat above the ‘ô’
Folks this is rare. There are only a handful of verbs ending in OR. By far, the most common is pôr; others include: compor, repor, expor, supor, etc (there really aren’t many more!)
Pôr = to put, put on
Why use pôr when you could just as well use the synonyms colocar or, botar?
Well, for one thing, Brazilians use pôr all_the_time. You can’t just ignore it. Worse yet, it has a really odd sound to it as it’s of course irregular as can be. Let’s have a look at it in action!
Este bolo é para PÔR sobre a mesa. / This cake is to put on the table.
And here is the same thing with colocar:
Este bolo é para COLOCAR sobre a mesa.
Let’s see some really, really common uses of pôr:
O pôr do sol é lindo.
Você põe açúcar? >> Do you take sugar?
Ponha as suas na cabeça! >> Put your hands on the head.
Ponha-se no meu lugar. >> Put yourself in my position.
