Preposições:

The eternal struggle.

You just have to practice your preositions. It’s a sport of memorization. But, herewith are some examples and explanation to speed you up.

Preposições são palavras que conectam frases ou palavras. Entendeu? As preposições mais comuns são:

a, após, até, com, contra, de, desde, em, entre, para, por, sem, sobre.

Ex.:

> Tudo foi consertado após a chuva.

> Todos chegaram a tempo.

> Ele vai tentar até conseguir.

> Esta carta é para minha mãe.

> Gosto de suco de laranja mas sem caroço.

Let’s look more closely at com:

It’s sometimes used exactly as in English, but other times not!

The simple, obvious usage is like this:

> I’m with you. > Eu estou com você.

> I agree with you. > Eu concordo com você.

Now, the less intuitive case:

> I’m thirsty. > Eu estou com sede.

> I’ve got the keys. > As chaves estão comigo.

> I’m in pain. > Eu estou com dor.

> I have a fever. > Eu estou (eu tô) com febre.

> I will meet a friend. > Eu vou encontrar com um amigo.

It helps to think of the literal translation. Imagine that you are living in the times of ‘ye olde english’ when one might say things like – She is with child, I am with hatred for my enemies, I am with much desire for her affection.

Ontem, hoje e amanhã.

Vou fazer tudo amanhã…

But today, let’s talk about time. Or rather, as expressões de tempo.

Em Português nós temos várias expressões que indicam tempo.

Amanhã > Tomorrow

Amanhã eu vou fazer uma festa em casa.

Let`s take a look at the BEST of them now:

Amanhã cedo > Tomorrow morning

Minha irmã vai estudar amanhã cedo.

Amanhã a noite > tomorrow night

Eu vou chegar em casa amanhã a noite.

Depois de amanhã > the day after tomorrow

Depois de amanhã eu vou receber visitas.

Daqui a 5 dias > 5 days after today

Daqui a cinco dias eu vou estar de férias.

Daqui a algumas horas > few hours after now.

Daqui a algumas horas o trânsito vai ficar ruim.

Ontem > Yesterday

Ontem eu assisti televisão até tarde.

Anteontem > the day before yesterday.

Anteontem eu estava ocupada com meus estudos.

Semana passada > last week

A festa foi semana passada.

Semana retrasada > the week before last week

Fomos para São Paulo a semana restrasada.

Ano passado > last year

Eu viajei para o Brasil ano passado.

The future is coming to brazil

So, Brazil is about to be  put onto the big stage – big time. The world cup of futebol + the olympics are both being hosted here. Soon, very soon. I live in Rio and everywhere I look, there is some new construction happening, Lots of cranes and guys in yellow jumpsuits leaning on shovels.

2014 – the World Cup: Em vários campos de futebol espalhado pelo pais. Vai ser muito bom. Todo mundo vai ficar mega animado. Nós vamos torcer para o nosso time da seleção Brasileira. Que vai ganhar, óbvio!

2016- The Olympics: Os jogos vão ser apresentados em vários lugares no Rio de Janeiro. Vai ser difícil conseguir ingressos para ver os eventos. Muita gente vai viajar para evitar a multidão que vai chegar. Mas eu vou ficar aqui. Vai ser super legal assistir aos eventos mesmo sabendo que o trânsito vai ficar bem complicado.

Ok, let’s review the future tense in it’s simplest form: IR + verb in the infinitive … WA-LLA you have spoken of the future.

Remember, IR goes like this:

eu VOU

você, ele, ela, agente VAI

nós VAMOS

vocês, eles, elas VÃO

Easy. Some examples? Vamos:

> O Brasil via ser a sede da próxima Copa Mundial.> Brasil will host the next World Cup.

> Eu vou ligar para Susana mais tarde.

> Você vai dormir cedo hoje?

> João vai sair com  Maria hoje.

Or, an even simpler form is to just use IR to express the future — without even using another verb after it! Like this:

> Eu vou para o supermercado hoje. > I will go to the supermarket today.

> Nós vamos para a praia agora.

> A gente vai para praia agora.

*That’s the most common way to talk about the future. It’s more informal than the way you learn in the books, but it’s the way people talk every day.

FALAR ou, DIZER?

 

Falar = speak/talk.
Dizer = say/tell.

Ele fala português. = He speaks Portuguese.
Ele estava falando comigo quando você nos interrompeu. = He was talking to me when you interrupted us.
Ele disse que não poderá vir hoje. = He said he won’t be able to come today.
Ele disse à namorada que a ama. = He told his girlfriend he loves her.

However, many people would substitute falar for dizer in Ele disse que não poderá vir hoje > Ele falou que não poderia vir hoje. and Ele disse à namorada que a ama > Ele falou à namorada que a ama, which is especially common, but still regarded as incorrect by many people.

8 de Março. Dia internacional da mulher

O dia 8 de março foi escolhido como o dia internacional da mulher.

 

Ao criar essa data, não se pretendia apenas comemorar, mas sim discutir o papel da mulher na sociedade atual e tentar diminuir o preconceito e a desvalorização da mulher. Que, mesmo com todo os avanços, elas ainda sofrem em muitos locais com salários baixos, violência masculina, jornada de trabalho excessiva, desvantagem na carreira profissinal entre outros.

Let’s take a look at this word. The translation is Devaluation.

The root of the word is the verb, valorizar: to value. Desvalorizar is just the opposite. Note that the ‘tion” ending in english is equivalent to the “ção” ending in portuguese.

Here are some similar cases:

English > Portuguese

promotion > promoção

station > estação

relation > relação

sensation > sensação

direction > direção

vibration > vibração

collection > coleção

duration > duração

attraction > atração

construction > construção

preparation > preparação

infection > infecção

concentration > concentração

distraction > distração

determination > determinição

frustration > frustração

A não ser que…

A não ser que é uma expressão usada para informar que uma ação só será realizada caso outra se realize.

Ou seja, uma ação depende de outra.

It’s translates to: unless it is that… Which is a bit formal sounding but will surely impress your friends if you can work it into the conversation!

Let’s do it:

> Eu vou a praia a não ser que chova. I will go to the beach unless it rains.

> Eu não vou entrar no mar, a não ser que você vá comigo. I’m not going in the water, unless you come with me.

> Eu vou assistir ao filme a não ser que não tenha ingressos. I’m going to watch the movie unless they don’t have more tickets.

Essa expressão pode ser substituída por se, a menos que, desde que, caso, contanto que.

> Eu vou a praia se não chover.

> Eu não vou entrar no mar, a menos que você vá comigo.

> Eu vou assistir ao filme, contanto que tenha ingressos.

Feliz Aniversário à Cidade Maravilhosa!

* Notice how “te” is used here: You could have said, “Rio, eu amo você” … but it’s really common to use “te” in place of “você” — notice the placement!

Hoje dia 1º de março de 2012, chegou a hora de cantar parabéns mais uma vez. Nesta data comemoramos o aniversário de uma das cidades mais bonitas de todo o mundo.

A cidade do Rio completa hoje 447 (Quatrocentos e quarenta e sete) anos e tem muito a comemorar. Pois está cada vez mais linda se preparando para sediar a Copa do Mundo e os Jogos Olímpicos.

TO GIVE: in the wild

DAR, the portuguese verb ‘to give’ makes it possible

Let’s look at how it’s implemented to convey “can I” or, “is it possible” >>

EXEMPLOS:

> ”Dá pra fazer agora?” >> Can it be done now?

> “Não dá para entender!”  >> It’s not possible to understand (doesn’t make sense!)

> “Dá para você falar agora?” >> Can you speak now?

You are literally saying, ‘Gives in order to …. ‘  And that seems weird at first but as soon as you embrace the idea that ‘to give’ has a positive, enabling connotation it makes perfect sense!

And there’s more good news. When something works out or, was possible you can simply say “deu certo!” OR, “não deu certo” (the opposite)

And finally, the icing grand prize: You can actually express that something is possible (doable) by simply saying “dá” !!!

EX:

> Você acha que você vai ter como me ajudar hoje mais tarde?

>> Dá. Dá, sim!

Vamos Fugir!

O carnaval está chegando e, claro, carnaval é bom para caramba mas… também durante essa época muitos brasileiros viajam para o litoral (the coast) para relaxar e curtir os quatro dias de laser. Sometimes it’s to escape the non-stop party and find some peace; sometimes it’s just to take advantage of the time off work to explore the amazing coastline here.

Vamos planejar nossa viagem!

Que tal então aprender algum vocabulário de viagem?

  • Mala > suitcase
  • USO > Vamos arrumar as malas?
  • a Rota > the route
  • USO > Qual é a melhor rota.
  • Abastecer > to refuel
  • USO > Temos que abastecer o carro antes de pegar a estrada.
  • Pegar a estrada > hit the road
  • USO > Está na hora de pegar a estrada.
  • Engarrafamento > Traffic jam
  • USO > Nós pegamos um grande engarrafamento.
