Por vs. Pôr (part 1)

Posted By Chuani on January 29th, 2012

Just putting that little “hat” above the ‘o’ makes a BIG difference.

What the hell?

Por is just an innocent little preposition that we use to say “for” or, “by” etc.

But it’s doppleganger Pôr, is actually a VERB — that’s right, verbs ending in ‘OR’ really_do exist. Though not often sighted in the wild, this is the one you really must know, even as a beginner.

Let’s compare them side-by-side: (lado-ao-lado)

Por

Eu pratico ioga por prazer. (FOR)

Ela amou ele por 6 anos. (FOR)

O bolo estava tão delicioso que ela comia devagar, pedaço por pedaço. (BY)

Voltei por acaso. (BY)

Nossa relação está por um fio. (BY)

And then of course, por gets used in expressions that talk about movement and position in time & space (calma-se, isso não é tão complicado!)

Anda por aí devagarinho. (AROUND THERE)

Por cima das cabeças, lá em cima, voam os pássaros. (UP ABOVE)

Tudo foi por água abaixo. (TO)

Pôr

In the next post, we’ll talk about the MYSTERIOUS, ILLUSIVE and INCREDIBLE verb Pôr!

Vania, Love of My Life…
